Buddhism, Psychiatry and Chronic Disease: The Role of Mindfulness in Modern Medicine

CONCLUSION
The majority of these studies show a significant stress reduction and increases in psychological wellbeing following Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. However there is very little definitive evidence for such a benefit. Although many studies do employ the use of a control group often controls were recruited from the waiting list to receive MBSR. This may bias the results of such studies as these subjects; clearly those interested in MBSR are more likely to believe it has a clinical benefit. Aside from the clear methodological problems associated with a lack of a control group, much of the available literature suffers from further flaws which only serve to limit the generalisability and validity of the reported results. These include: use of unvalidated tools to measure outcomes and failure to control for confounding variables such as concurrent treatment and arbitrary determination of the primary outcome measure as evidence for clinical response.
This literature review highlights the need for large trials and methodologically sound research. Yet there is evidence to suggest the potential promise of mindfulness as an effective intervention for enhancing the psychological and spiritual wellbeing of patients with wide range of medical disorders and psychiatric diagnoses, and for health care professionals. Whilst the biological basis of both medical and psychiatric disease is advancing exponentially, as we understand more about the human brain questions are raised as to the basis of the mind, and the interface between psychiatry, psychology, philosophy and spirituality becomes ever more interesting. This, and its concurrent growing popularity, might suggest there is a role, alongside more traditional treatments, for MBSR in modern medicine.

Jimmy Savile was part of satanic ring
JIMMY SAVILE beat and raped a 12-year-old girl during a secret satanic ritual in a hospital.
The perverted star wore a hooded robe and mask as he abused the terrifi ed victim in a candle-lit basement.
He also chanted “Hail Satan” in Latin as other paedophile devil worshippers joined in and assaulted the girl at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. The attack, which happened in 1975, shines a sinister new light on the former DJ’s 54-year reign of terror.
Savile, who died aged 84 in October 2011, is now Britain’s worst sex offender after police revealed he preyed on at least 450 victims aged eight to 47.
The girl kept her torment hidden for nearly 20 years before finally opening up to therapist Valerie Sinason.
Dr Sinason told the Sunday Express she first spoke to the victim in 1992. “She had been a patient at Stoke Mandeville in 1975 when Savile was a regular visitor.
“She recalled being led into a room that was filled with candles on the lowest level of the hospital, somewhere that was not regularly used by staff. Several adults were there, including Jimmy Savile who, like the others, was wearing a robe and a mask.
“She recognised him because of his distinctive voice and the fact that his blond hair was protruding from the side of the mask. He was not the leader but he was seen as important because of his fame.
“She was molested, raped and beaten and heard words that sounded like ‘Ave Satanas’, a Latinised version of ‘Hail Satan’, being chanted. There was no mention of any other child being there and she cannot remember how long the attack lasted but she was left extremely frightened and shaken.”
Savile was a volunteer porter and fundraiser at the hospital between 1965 and 1988 and had his own quarters there.
Five years after the hospital attack, he abused a second victim during another black mass ceremony held at a house in a wealthy London street.

What is dissociation?
Your sense of reality and who you are depend on your feelings, thoughts, sensations, perceptions and memories.
If these become ‘disconnected’ from each other, or don’t register in your conscious mind, your sense of identity, your memories, and the way you see yourself and the world around you will change. This is what happens when you dissociate.
It’s as if your mind is not in your body; as if you are looking at yourself from a distance; like looking at a stranger.
Everyone has periods when we feel disconnected. Sometimes this happens naturally and unconsciously. For example, we often drive a familiar route, and arrive with no memory of the journey or of what we were thinking about. Some people even train themselves to use dissociation (i.e. to disconnect) to calm themselves, or for cultural or spiritual reasons. Sometimes we dissociate as a defence mechanism to help us deal with and survive traumatic experiences.
Dissociation can also be a side effect of some drugs, medication and alcohol.
Many mental health problems, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder, have dissociative features.
The different types of dissociation
There are five types of dissociation:
Amnesia
This is when you can’t remember incidents or experiences that happened at a particular time, or when you can’t remember important personal information.
Depersonalisation
A feeling that your body is unreal, changing or dissolving. It also includes out-of-body experiences, such as seeing yourself as if watching a movie.
Derealisation
The world around you seems unreal. You may see objects changing in shape, size or colour, or you may feel that other people are robots.
Identity confusion
Feeling uncertain about who you are. You may feel as if there is a struggle within to define yourself.
Identity alteration
This is when there is a shift in your role or identity that changes your behaviour in ways that others could notice. For instance, you may be very different at work from when you are at home.

In the 1940s Dr Wolfgang Luthe became a student of Schultz, studying psychosomatic medicine and Autogenic Therapy. In the late 1940s, Luthe emigrated to Montreal, Canada where he continued to develop Autogenic Therapy as Assistant Professor of Psychophysiology at the University of Montreal. Schultz and Luthe collaborated in writing and collating research into all aspects of Autogenic Therapy. In 1969, a year before Schultz’s death, they published the first three of the six volumes on Autogenic Therapy which now constitute the seminal work on the subject. Since then, several editions of these volumes have been published in nine languages. In 2001 the BAS acquired the copyright of these six volumes which were reprinted in the UK. In 1978 Dr. Malcolm Carruthers and psychotherapist Vera Diamond studied Autogenic Therapy with Dr. Luthe in Montreal and brought the method to Britain. The first Autogenic Training courses were held in Queen Anne Street in London in 1979. Later, Dr Luthe contributed to the therapist training courses of 1982 and 1983, introducing his innovations of the Intentional Off-loading Exercises. In addition, British AT therapists experienced Luthe’s methods in Autogenic Neutralisation and Creativity Mobilisation Technique. The British Association for Autogenic Training and Therapy was founded in 1984, with Luthe’s approval and blessing. This became the British Autogenic Society (BAS) in 1999. The Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (formerly the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital) has offered AT to patients suffering a wide variety of illnesses for over 20 years with very positive results. A report into physical and sexual abuse at children’s homes that was suppressed for almost 20 years concluded there was “extensive” mistreatment of young people over a “substantial” number of years.
The Jillings report into residential care units in north Wales, which has finally been released, said the lives of many children had been blighted by the abuse they suffered while living at the homes.
It said the panel that investigated the abuse had considered abandoning its inquiry as it was not sure it had all the material from agencies including police and social services that it needed to see the whole picture.

Ellesmere Port update…
Yesterday saw a fantastic response to our plea for solidarity, both from the community in Ellesmere Port and beyond.
Peaceful protests were held outside the site from 10am onwards, and a separate group of activists ventured into the town centre for an awareness raising rally in the middle of the afternoon.
After dark, there was a shift change. Protesters walked slowly in front of a van exiting the site to show their opposition and resistance to the fracking industry.
Frack Free Ellesmere Port would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along, including the Anti-fracking Nanas, and protesters from the Wirral and Liverpool. We’ll be holding a similar event next Saturday (22nd November) so please come along and show your support! Together we stand united.

Pro-fracking Tory MP rejects drilling in his own backyard
A senior Tory MP who has previously voiced strong support for fracking has said he is “very unlikely” to back an application to drill on land in his own constituency.
In what is being seen as a test case for fracking in national parks, Andrew Tyrie, chairman of the Treasury Select Committee, has made it clear he is likely to oppose plans to drill in Fernhurst, a village in the South Downs National Park in West Sussex.
Celtique Energy submitted a draft application to drill on land in the area on Thursday. While a formal application is expected early next month, according to The Times.

The story is about a little boy who vividly remembers a previous incarnation of being a soldier in World War II and how he had died. From the information provided, it is difficult to say how else the boy would have known the information he shares without actually having remembered it.
Interestingly, the boy also talks about how he remembers choosing the family that he incarnated with in his current lifetime, something that is a common claim amongst people who have had near death experiences and who have been regressed in the stages after death.
